The reality, however, is that taking part in certain family-friendly excursions does not always suit our budgets. We have therefore put together a guide to 10 affordable activities and excursions to do with the kids in and around Durban.

Lumo Galleria Mini Golf (The Pavilion, Westville)
Who does not love mini golf? It’s simply a classic when it comes to family fun and entertainment. And this classic offers a twist: a glow-in-the-dark golf ball. The Fun Company is also a great kids party venue.

Warrior’s Gate Museum
The Warriors Gate MOTH Museum began by veterans of World War. MOTH stands for Memorable Order of Tin Hats. Walking through the museum you will get to see a collection of war relics, medals, uniforms and other war memorabilia. If you would like a tour, please inquire.

Go Wild in Nature
Mitchell Park Zoo (Berea, Durban)
Although this reprieve from city life started out as an ostrich farm, it now houses a variety of small animals and birds, including crocodiles, racoons and more. The kids will love the walk-through aviary, sand-filled playground and jungle gyms. Picnics and braais and allowed.

Umgeni River Bird Park (Durban North)
This tranquil park is situated in an old quarry site, on 3,5 hectares of lush tropical gardens. Take the time to stroll through the gardens keeping a look out for any of the 800 birds who call the park their home.

Glenholme Nature Reserve (Kloof)
The reserve has birds, a forest and a swamp with a dam at lower end. There is also a breath-taking waterfall that flows into a gorge. The Reserve has a variety of small animals and birds. Families can enjoy picnics and there are braai facilities.

Paradise Valley (Pinetown)
You will find that the Umbilo river runs right through the reserve. There is also a spectacular waterfall and you will be able to visit the Umbilo Water Works (1887-1905), which is a national monument. You will be able to walk through some wonderful trails, which lead through grasslands, forest and over bridges. Facilities include picnic and braai areas as well as a conference centre.

Krantzkloof Nature Reserve
The reserve has 2 fantastic picnic spots where the whole family can enjoy their day out together. You can also go on self-guided walks, information can be obtained at the picnic sights.
